In the US, a fractional CTO typically costs $8,000 to $18,000 USD per month for hands-on, part-time leadership of one to two days a week. Advisory arrangements run $2,000 to $10,000 a month, embedded engagements of three or more days a week $18,000 to $25,000, and interim CTOs $20,000 to $40,000. Hourly rates cluster between $170 and $250.
Those numbers come from published 2026 rate data from marketplaces and fractional firms, and they vary more than most pricing pages admit. This guide lays out the tiers, what moves the price, how the cost compares to a full-time hire, and an option many US companies overlook: a fractional CTO based in Canada, working in your time zone.
What you get from a fractional CTO
A fractional CTO is a senior technology executive who runs your technology strategy and engineering function part-time, on a monthly retainer. They own the decisions a CTO owns: architecture, the engineering roadmap, hiring, vendors, security posture, and the technology story you tell investors and your board. What changes is the time commitment, not the seniority.
The model fits companies that need that judgment before they can justify, or attract, a full-time CTO: funded startups without a technical cofounder, companies modernizing a legacy stack, and non-tech businesses whose product now depends on software or AI.
US fractional CTO rates by tier (2026)
Published 2026 data from US marketplaces and fractional firms clusters into four tiers, usually billed as a monthly retainer:
| Engagement tier | Typical commitment | Monthly cost (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Advisory | 2 to 4 hours/week | $2,000 – $10,000 |
| Hands-on, part-time | 1 to 2 days/week | $8,000 – $18,000 |
| Embedded | 3+ days/week | $18,000 – $25,000 |
| Interim CTO | Near full-time, temporary | $20,000 – $40,000 |
Ranges combine Go Fractional marketplace data, A.Team, Kompella Technologies and CTO On Demand (2026). Go Fractional's live data put a typical 15-hour-a-week engagement at $10,200 to $15,000 per month as of September 30, 2026.
Hourly and day rates follow the same spread. Marketplace data puts the middle half of fractional CTO rates at $170 to $250 an hour, with a median of $200. Firms that publish their pricing quote $200 to $400 an hour for senior leaders, and up to $500 for specialists. Day rates run $1,500 to $4,000.
What moves the price
- Depth, more than anything. The step from advisory to hands-on is the step from reviewing decisions to making them: running sprint planning, hiring engineers, owning vendor relationships. Price the hours you actually need.
- Domain. Hardware, regulated industries and AI-heavy products sit at the top of each range, because the pool of leaders who have shipped in those domains is small.
- Stage and scope. A seed-stage company usually needs an advisory or part-time leader to set the architecture and make the first engineering hires. A Series B company with a team of twenty needs someone embedded.
- Marketplace or firm. Marketplace rates run lower because individual candidates set their own prices. Firms price higher and may bring a team behind the individual.
- Currency. A leader based in Canada who quotes in Canadian dollars can cost meaningfully less in US dollars at current exchange rates. More on that below.
Fractional vs. full-time CTO: the US math
A full-time CTO in the US is a six-figure salary before equity, recruiting, and the months it takes to find one:
| Fractional CTO (hands-on) | Full-time CTO | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cash cost | $96,000 – $216,000 | $325,000 – $490,000 in the first year, all-in |
| Base salary | Not applicable | $150,000 – $220,000 at seed and Series A; $250,000 – $350,000 at Series B to D |
| Equity | Usually none | Typically 1% – 5% at seed and Series A |
| Recruiting fee | None | $40,000 – $80,000 |
| Time to start | Days to weeks | 3 to 6 months of search |
Full-time figures from A.Team (first-year all-in cash cost, recruiting fee and search time) and KORE1 (base salary and equity by stage), 2026. Built In puts the average US CTO base salary at $224,550, with total cash compensation of $280,985.
At the hands-on tier, a fractional CTO costs roughly 30 to 45% of a full-time hire's first-year cash cost, with no equity and no search. The trade-off is availability: a fractional leader isn't in every meeting. A common signal that it's time to hire full-time is an engineering team past ten to fifteen people, or technology becoming the product itself, when investors expect a full-time technical executive. Ideally, your fractional CTO runs that search.
Fractional Chief AI Officer, CEO and COO rates
The same marketplace data covers the rest of the fractional C-suite. As of September 30, 2026, Go Fractional's data put the Chief AI Officer and CEO roles at a typical 13 hours a week:
| Role | Monthly cost (USD) | Average hourly (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional Chief AI Officer | $7,800 – $13,000 | $205 |
| Fractional CEO | $7,800 – $13,000 | $206 |
| Fractional COO | $7,800 – $11,800 | $194 |
Go Fractional marketplace data, September 30, 2026. The Chief AI Officer figures rest on a small sample (4 job posts, 263 candidate profiles). Vendor-published Chief AI Officer ranges run wider, from about $5,000 to $30,000 a month depending on scope.

Hiring a fractional CTO based in Canada
A fractional CTO doesn't need to be in your city, and for a US company the next-closest option is often across the border. Canada's tech hubs sit in US time zones: Toronto and Montreal share Eastern Time with New York, and Vancouver shares Pacific Time with San Francisco. The work happens in English, and in French if you have Quebec operations.
The cost difference is the exchange rate. Canadian fractional CTOs price in a range of $3,000 to $25,000 CAD per month and $200 to $450 CAD an hour. At the Bank of Canada's rate of 1.4188 Canadian dollars per US dollar on September 29, 2026, that's roughly $2,100 to $17,600 USD a month and $141 to $317 USD an hour. Not every Canadian provider quotes in CAD, so ask which currency the contract uses: a CAD-denominated retainer moves with the exchange rate.
The paperwork is lighter than most US companies expect:
- Collect a Form W-8BEN-E from a Canadian company, or a W-8BEN from an individual contractor, instead of a W-9. The IRS says a valid Form W-8 exempts you from Form 1099 reporting and backup withholding on the payment.
- Where the work is performed decides where the income is sourced, according to IRS Publication 515, regardless of where the contract was signed or where payment is made. Work done in Canada is foreign-source income, which is generally not subject to US withholding.
- On-site days change that: days worked inside the US count as US-source income. If your fractional CTO will fly in for board meetings or lab time, plan those days with your accountant.
- Write IP assignment, confidentiality and data-access terms into the contract explicitly, and agree on which jurisdiction's law governs it.
This is general information, not tax advice; your accountant should confirm the treatment for your situation. It's also how Vozwin works: we're based in Montreal, on Eastern Time, and take on fractional engagements with companies across Canada and the United States.
How to choose a fractional CTO
- Decide the tier first. Most seed and Series A companies need hands-on leadership one to two days a week, not a figurehead or a full-time interim.
- Match the domain. If your product has hardware, regulated data or AI at its core, require a leader who has shipped in that domain, not one who has advised on it.
- Ask for three references from engagements that have ended, and ask each how the handover went.
- Agree on outcomes for the first 90 days: an architecture review, a hiring plan, and a roadmap your board can read.
- Settle currency, IP ownership and on-site expectations in the contract, especially with a cross-border leader.
- Plan the exit ramp. A good fractional CTO expects to hire their full-time replacement and hand over cleanly.
